Façade Restoration

Client: Selfridges & Co (London)
Year: 1999-2001

The project was centred upon the restoration of the store’s well-known Portland stone façade. This had been comprehensively ravaged by time, smog and pollution.

Lees Associates addressed corrosion problems of the underlying structure by innovative modernised use of an early 19th century technology, the application of cathodic protection (CP). The priority throughout the project was to remain true to the spirit of the structure’s original design and materials.

Whilst refurbishment works were being carried out to Selfridges famous façade, Lees Associates negotiated planning permission and comissioned the largest photograph in the world to cover the entire building.
