Restoration

Lees Associates have completed the restoration of Selfridges well-known Portland stone façade. This had been comprehensively ravaged not only by time, smog and pollution, but was also suffering from the effects of corrosion in the building’s steel frame.

Lees Associates’ solution was to protect the steel frame against further corrosion by applying a cathodic protection* (CP) system. This was the first time in history that the technique had been used outside of boat building.

It wasn’t only the steel frame that was causing problems. Approved cleaning processes were used to clean up the Portland stone façade to avoid causing further erosion, ensuring that the facade retains its identity as part of our architectural history.
