MEET THE TEAM: EMA BENZAR

In the latest in our regular series, we meet Romanian Architectural Assistant, Ema, and discover the role a humble pencil had in her choice of career, why LA are such a good fit for her to fulfil her potential and how she recharges by immersing herself in nature and taking part in sports activities.

1. What got you into architecture originally?

The Rotring Pencil holds a special place in my heart, as it represents a tool for creativity, a symbol of guided advice, and a gift. I have always been inclined to anything creative from a young age, from drawing and painting to building birdhouses using twigs and anything at hand. I knew I wanted to follow an artistic path but needed to figure out where to start. It was then that I met an Architect with whom I had the opportunity to discuss my interests. He saw my potential and gifted me a Rotring Pencil, which became a symbol of my path in architecture. It was a turning point for me, as I decided to pursue architecture school as a first step towards a profession that would satisfy my creative needs. The Rotring Pencil served as a reminder that guidance and support can come in many forms and that a small gift can sometimes make a significant impact.

2. Describe your role at LA

Upon completion of my Master's in Architecture at the Technical University of Cluj-Napoca, Romania, I embarked on my professional journey at Lees Associates as a Part II Architectural Assistant. Since joining the firm, refurbishment projects have been my primary focus. My role entails producing drawing packages for concept design, planning, tender, and construction, all while working under the close supervision of the Project Architect.

3. Where do your particular passions, skills and interests lie?

Preserving our built heritage environment is a cause that I am deeply passionate about. To me, these structures have an inherent value beyond their practical purpose. They are a link to our past and have the potential to be infused with new life and purpose. By preserving them, we can honour their historical and cultural significance and the memories they evoke. My academic and professional experience in this field has given me a deep appreciation for the importance of refurbishment and adaptive reuse projects, and I am eager to contribute to the design process in any way I can.

4. What do you enjoy about what you do?

I am thrilled to be a part of a team that consistently advocates for a growth mindset. This has enabled me to continually evolve and expand my knowledge, skills, and perspectives. Each day, I am presented with new opportunities to learn and grow, both personally and professionally. There is nothing more satisfying to me than fulfilling our client's needs and bringing their objectives to fruition.

5. What are your plans for the future?

My aim for the foreseeable future is to enhance my professional knowledge and technical abilities. My immediate goal is to gain the necessary experience to pass the RIBA Part III course, and ultimately become a Chartered and Registered Architect.

6. What do you get up to outside of the office?

I love engaging in sports-related activities that are fun and exciting, such as bouldering, rollerblading, and mountain biking. Whenever I have some free time, I like to spend it in nature, as it helps me recharge and feel ready to tackle new challenges. There is just something about being outdoors that rejuvenates my mind and body and allows me to appreciate the beauty of the world around me.
